Civil society joins up for universal health coverage
During the opening of the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly in Geneva, civil society organisations from Europe, the United States and Africa launched a joint statement that calls on world leaders, governments, ministries of health and civil society to take a stand for universal heath coverage (UHC).
Their statement reads:
Around the world, the cost of healthcare continues to prevent poor people from seeking care while also pushing millions into poverty each year. Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) will ensure that all people have access to health services without fear of falling into poverty. Not only is it about ensuring the right to health, but making progress towards UHC will accelerate social and economic growth and is fundamental to sustainable development.
The global momentum for UHC continues to grow and today marks an important step in demonstrating civil society support for this agenda.
The launch is just the beginning as organisations from around the globe are asked to sign this call to action and join the UHC movement. To learn what you can do to support UHC, read the civil society statement here. If you would like to pledge your organisation’s support for the statement please email coordination@actionforglobalhealth.eu.
This coalition wants to ensure that UHC is at the core of any global development framework to follow on from the Millennium Development Goals. Join us to help make UHC a reality!
